All four were charged in 3rd District Court Wednesday with one count of tampering with a witness, a second-degree felony. All of the men are believed to be gang members, court documents state.

Prosecutors allege that one of those charged, 22-year-old Mesa Rith, orchestrated the threats against another West Valley boy who was scheduled to testify against him in court.

Rith, who police say is the leader of a West Valley area gang, is in the Davis County Jail awaiting trial on federal charges that he robbed the Magna branch of the Zions National Bank in November 1998. He was indicted in January.

He also faces state charges of aggravated burglary, attempted murder and illegal firearms possession from an unrelated case. He was charged with those crimes in 1998. The three other men charged with witness tampering remain at large.
