Robber leaves empty-handed after run-in with cash register

A stubborn cash register frustrated a robber who left a restaurant empty-handed after he was unable to open the machine. The attempted robbery was reported at 12:37 a.m. Wednesday at Dee's Family Restaurant, 855 W. North Temple, where the man walked in, confronted a 17-year-old waitress and asked her how much cash was in the register.

A Salt Lake police report said the employee told him she didn't know the contents and turned away to do some cleaning. She then felt something pressed against the side of her head and the man told her to give him the money in the register.

She repeated she didn't know how to open the register and fled into the back room. The manager and cook saw the man trying to open the register, but he fled after he was unsuccessful.

The would-be robber was described as 18 to 21, 5 feet, 11 inches tall and 130 pounds. He had long black hair pulled into a ponytail, had a goatee, and was wearing a black-and-white shirt with blue jeans.
