Kaysville plans Dec. 31 party around new Millennial Clock

KAYSVILLE -- Kaysville officials are planning to ring in the new millennium and celebrate the city's sesquicentennial celebration by starting up the city's Millennial Clock. The council has approved spending up to $3,000 on a New Year's Eve party on Friday, Dec. 31, whose focus will be the new timepiece to be located in front of City Hall.

Councilman H. Arthur Johnson said the city has organized a celebration committee and is considering street dances, bands, booths, food and other events. Schools and other public buildings near City Hall may also be used for the festivities.

Closing off some streets near City Hall, including Main Street, is also being considered.

In addition, Kaysville is inviting Fruit Heights to participate in the activities. Fruit Heights is considering adding another $1,000 to the celebration fund.

Mayor Brian Cook said the Millennial Clock will be the centerpiece of the celebration. He said he's hoping to get the city's oldest resident, Elizabeth Tall, to start the clock. Tall is more than 100 years old, and in the year 2000 her life will span three centuries.

Cook said the clock is expected to be installed early next month and could be playing some Christmas chimes for the holiday season.

He also stressed that no tax money will be used on the Millennial Clock. After months of public donations, he said he believes there is now sufficient money to both purchase the clock and install it.

He said he can't provide a dollar amount on the total donations yet because a large block of stock was donated to the project and hasn't yet been valued.
