New $1 coin going on display at Expo Mart show in S.L.

A first-strike example of the new dollar coin will be displayed at the Western National Historical Artifacts and Paper Money show, which began Thursday at the Expo Mart, 230 W. 200 South. The U.S. Mint will be releasing the new "Golden Dollar" next year, but the very first coin of that type will be displayed at the show. H. Robert Campbell, current president of the American Numismatic Association, will attend the show and deliver the coin in a special ceremony.

Early Mormon books, gold coins and many other items will also be on display at the event.

The new dollar coin will be on display at Campbell's table at noon on Friday, Nov. 19. Campbell is the first president of the group from Utah, an organization that is chartered by Congress and remains the largest coin organization in the world.

The new coin is golden in color, with the image of Sacajawea carrying her child on her back on one side of the coin and an eagle in flight on the reverse side. It has a smooth, plain edge to make it easily distinguished from other coins. Its predecessor, the Anthony dollar coin, was often confused with the quarter and was rejected by the public.

The Western National Historical Artifacts show will be open Thursday from 2-8 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Hours for Sunday, Nov. 21, the last day of the show, will be 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Admission is $8 per person.

"Love Lights the Holidays" is an annual celebration of festivity, bright lights and the spirit of giving. The two-day program offers visitors original yuletide decor that can be bought at auction; live holiday entertainment and food, as well as games and prizes for the kids; a kids-only Christmas store where everything is $5 or less (usually much less); a stocking stuffer gift shop; wagon rides (a small fee will be charged for wagon rides); train rides for the kids and more. And to top it off, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be on hand to greet the kids.

Admission is free. The two-day event raises money for community wellness and health education projects at Alta View and Cottonwood hospitals, including free neighborhood immunization clinics, anti-crime and anti-violence programs, assistance programs for homebound elderly, safety programs at nearby schools and other community projects.

Wheeler Farm will turn on its spectacular light display two days early just for patrons of the "Love Lights the Holidays" celebration.
