Have I got this straight? The ranchers in the Escalante region want the taxpayers to build them a new dam and reservoir, continue to subsidize their grazing livestock on land that belongs to the public, all so that they can "maintain the lifestyle the way we are used to"?
The southern Utah redrock desert is lousy cattle country, and I am weary of subsidizing a 19th century "lifestyle." The ranchers have even intimidated the locals who are making money from tourism and have positive feelings toward the monument. And no, I am not a "radical environmentalist," just a taxpayer weary of finding livestock fouling precious water supplies on public land that belongs to all of us.
