WASHINGTON (AP) -- Most Americans believe insurance companies should cover infertility treatments, according to a survey commissioned by a group promoting such medical procedures.
The survey, conducted by Peter Hart Research, found that 61 percent of those questioned said insurance should pay at least some of the cost of fertility drugs and 59 percent said in vitro fertilization should be covered. The Bertarelli Foundation, a nonprofit organization that wants treatment for infertile couples around the world, commissioned the survey of 1,016 U.S. adults between Oct. 28 and Nov. 1, 1999.
The survey also found:
Nearly 40 percent said a family member or close friend has experienced infertility.
While 57 percent said they would recommend that an infertile couple seek medical treatment, almost half said that because such treatments made multiple births more likely they viewed the techniques less favorably.
Nine out of 10 said infertility is just as likely to be caused by either partner.
The results have a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points.
