TROMBLEY SIGNS WITH ORIOLES: The Baltimore Orioles began the process of revamping their dreadful bullpen by signing right-hander Mike Trombley to a $7.75 million, three-year contract.
Trombley, a former Salt Lake Buzz pitcher, took over as closer for the Twins after Minnesota traded Rick Aguilera to the Chicago Cubs.

NETWORKS VIE FOR NCAA: CBS, Disney's ABC-ESPN and Fox networks began presentations, hoping to win television rights to the NCAA men's basketball tournament after the CBS contract expires in 2002. The presentations to NCAA executives at the organization's headquarters were to continue for one more day.

PHILLIPS HOPES TO RETURN: Running back Lawrence Phillips, suspended by San Francisco for conduct detrimental to the team, said he didn't deserve such a harsh punishment and hopes to play for the 49ers again.
Phillips denied he was insubordinate at last Friday's practice or burst out laughing during an on-field lecture by coach Steve Mariucci.
MUHAMMAD CLEARED: Although Steve Muhammad was cleared in the death of his wife, prosecutors said the Indianapolis Colts defensive back will face domestic battery charges that could send him to prison for 1 1/2 years. Nichole Muhammad died Nov. 7 when injuries from a car accident forced her into premature labor. The Colts rookie was arrested 10 days earlier on charges of beating his wife. An autopsy indicated the beating did not contribute to her death.
