Brigham YoungMEN'S BASKETBALL: Five highly regarded recruits have signed NCAA letters-of-intent to play basketball at BYU for coach Steve Cleveland. Four top in-state prospects -- Brighton High's Jesse Pinegar (6-9, forward/center), Cottonwood High's Derek Dawes (6-11, center), Provo High's Jacob Chrisman (6-9, forward) and UVSC transfer Travis Hansen of Mountain View (6-6, guard/forward) -- join Austin Ainge (6-1, point guard), Danny Ainge's son who plays in Gilbert, Ariz., to make up one of the best recruiting classes to ever sign with the Cougars.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: After two solid victories in exhibition games, head coach Trent Shippen opens his third season with Saturday's game against Oklahoma City University. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., at the Marriott Center.
SWIMMING & DIVING: BYU athletes Gary Tan and Scott Randall, both freshmen, were honored as the Mountain West Conference male swimmer and diver of the week Wednesday.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Toraino Johnson, a redshirt freshman at Garden City Junior College in Garden City, Kan., has signed to play hoops for coach Stew Morrill. Johnson, a 6-4 small forward, will have three years of eligibility remaining when he joins the Aggies next fall. Johnson is averaging 15 points and eight rebounds through six games this season.
VOLLEYBALL: Juniors Denae Mohlman (first team, freshman of year) and Amy Goulding-Crosbie (second team) were honored by the Big West Conference as all-conference players as voted on by the coaches.

SWIMMING & DIVING: The Utah men's and women's swimming and diving teams round out their fall competition at the Minnesota Invitational this weekend. The meet, held in Minneapolis, has become a yearly event on the Ute schedule. Utah's Travis Hildebrand and Johanna Nielsen were given at-large invitations to compete in the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Nov. 22 in Bloomington, Ind. Along with Chris Merkley who qualified last Saturday by placing seventh at the Mountain Regional, the Utah cross country team will send three runners to the national championships.
