Former BYU tight end Chad Lewis won't be a 49er after all. Instead, he's back in Philadelphia.
Lewis was placed on waivers by the St. Louis Rams Tuesday, allowing any other teams, beginning with those with the worst records in the NFL, to pick him up.Tuesday night, Lewis was told he was going to the San Francisco 49ers, who have a 3-6 mark.
Any team with a worse record had 24 hours to claim Lewis off the waiver wire, and the Eagles (3-7) did exactly that.
So, instead of going to San Francisco, Lewis is returning to the team that signed him as a rookie free agent out of BYU in 1997.
He'll play for Eagle coach and former Cougar offensive lineman Andy Reid. In his first tour of duty in Philadelphia, under coach Ray Rhodes, Lewis caught 12 passes for 94 yards and four touchdowns. He was released late in the 1998 season and was signed by the Rams. -- Jeff Call
