LOGAN -- Police are still investigating circumstances surrounding an early morning shooting Thursday.

Full details have not been released, but detectives say a Logan man plotted to gain a large sum of money by having an acquaintance shoot him.At 1:06 a.m., police responded to 741 N. 200 West and found the man, 26, with a gunshot wound to his upper leg. The man said he had been shot after surprising a robber in his garage, police said.

Detectives said evidence at the scene did not mesh with the man's story and, after being pressured, the man admitted his story was false. He then told detectives he had been with the acquaintance earlier in the evening, an argument arose, and the man shot him with a .22 caliber pistol.

Detectives didn't buy the second story either and now say the man devised a plan that would make him a significant amount of money if he was shot. The man also promised to pay the acquaintance several thousand dollars for shooting him, police said.

The acquaintance was booked into the Cache County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault, a second degree felony. The victim, a parolee of the Utah State Prison, was taken into custody by Adult Probation and Parole. Charges against the man are pending, and more information about his plan will be released upon further investigation, police said.
