Robert Schumann -- Christian Thielemann conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra in Symphony No. 3 in E Flat Major, Opus 97, "Rhenish"; "Genoveva Overture," Opus 81; and Overture, Scherzo and Finale, Opus 52. (Deutsche Grammophon,**1/2 )Schumann is often flabby and directionless in the hands of Thielemann in this latest and disappointing release from the German maestro. Perplexing, these qualities, in a conductor whose Wagner disc with the Philadelphia Orchestra was full of purpose. It just goes to show you what an elusive spirit Schumann is. In the opening of the Symphony No. 3, Thielemann chooses to wallow in moments -- and some lovely moments indeed -- rather than keep an ear out for the architecture. The sweep is lost.
