CABLE TV PIONEER GIVES $4 MILLION TO UNIVERSITY

The University of Northern Colorado has received a $4 million gift from cable television pioneer Bill Daniels.Daniels, 78, a native of Greeley, asked that the money be used for scholarships, capital construction and endowment funds, the university announced Wednesday. The gift is one of the largest in the school's history.

A $1 million permanent scholarship fund will be set up in honor of Joe Tennessen, a longtime Greeley activist and owner of KFKA radio. Another $1 million will be used to start the Hank Brown Scholarship Fund in honor of the former senator and current UNC president.

Daniels, who owned the Utah Stars in the 1970s, is chairman of Daniels Communications Inc. of Denver. He is one of the people credited with bringing cable TV technology into widespread use.

'ASHES' AUTHOR BUYS HOME IN EAST FOR $1.25 MILLION

The rags-to-riches story of Frank McCourt just got richer. The Pulitzer Prize-winning writer of "Angela's Ashes" bought an eight-room house in Roxbury, Conn., on 25 acres for $1.25 million. The property includes a pond, a small red barn and a silo. Roxbury, a town of 1,900, also counts Dustin Hoffman and Arthur Miller among its residents.

COUNTRY SINGER ON WAY BACK TO BASEBALL CAMP

Garth Brooks is on his way back to spring training.

The country singer was returning to the San Diego Padres baseball camp in Peoria, Ariz., Thursday after taking a few days off to be with his mother, Colleen Brooks, who underwent surgery Tuesday in Los Angeles to remove a cancerous spot from her mouth.

"She's doing fine. They feel like everything's great," Capitol Records spokesman Scott Stem said. "She's going to accompany Garth to spring training."

O.J.'S DAUGHTER MEETS CONDITIONS OF PROBATION

O.J. Simpson's adult daughter, Arnelle, has met the conditions of her probation for drunken driving, according to a Beverly Hills prosecutor's report that ends the case.

Arnelle Simpson, 30, paid more than $10,000 to repair an apartment building and bus bench she damaged with her black Saab convertible, prosecutor Laura Jane Maglinger told a judge Wednesday.

Arnelle Simpson pleaded no contest last year to misdemeanor drunken driving charges. Her blood alcohol was measured at 0.20 percent after the accident April 24; the legal limit in California is 0.08.
