WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Transportation Department has announced $6.5 million in grants to help the Salt Lake International Airport prepare for the 2002 Olympics.

Sen. Bob Bennett, R-Utah, who requested such funding last year, said, "Realizing that the world will be arriving at our doorstep in just three short years, DOT is making a significant and timely contribution to help meet our transportation needs."But Olympic crowds aside, the Salt Lake airport is a busy, rapidly growing hub in the western United States."

He said $4 million will go toward the first stages of building a new passenger terminal, concourses and runway apron and taxi areas.
