No news is good news for Utah basketball fans who have been fretting over the annual rumors about coach Rick Majerus and other jobs.
For the past week, Majerus' name has been mentioned prominently in connection with the open San Diego State and Notre Dame coaching positions. A decision on the San Diego State job is reportedly to be made early this week, while the Notre Dame selection process may drag on for a couple of weeks, according to sources.Majerus appeared on national television over the weekend and repeated his "99 percent sure" comment about staying at Utah. He did make one definitive statement, however, by saying that he would definitely not coach in the NBA next year.
He also said he was returning to Utah Sunday evening, but efforts to reach him Sunday night and Monday morning were unsuccessful.
Majerus' "listening" to other job offers has become an annual occurrence the past few years. Two years ago, it was Golden State of the NBA; last year, he entertained offers from Arizona State and Texas.
Majerus has made it no secret he would talk to San Diego State athletic director Rick Bay about the open SDSU job because he is friends with Bay. He told ESPN that while he hadn't taken his name out of consideration for the SDSU job, his talks with Bay were "going to help the next guy."
The other top candidates at San Diego State are reportedly former St. John's coach Fran Fraschilla and Gonzaga coach Dan Monson.
One of the top candidates on Notre Dame's list is Xavier coach Skip Prosser, whose team is playing in the NIT Final Four this week in New York. He can't be interviewed, however, until the tournament is over Thursday night.
