ORLANDO, Fla. -- One look at Tim Herron and it's easy to see why they call him Lumpy, why the conversation is usually more about club sandwiches than club selection.
One look at his record and it may be time to start mentioning Herron's name with others at the lower end of the deep class of stars in their 20s.His playoff victory over Tom Lehman on Sunday in the Bay Hill Invitational was his third in four years on the PGA Tour. At 29, Herron now has as many victories as Jim Furyk, and one more than Stuart Appleby.
The difference is when Herron looks at the money list, and sees his name well down in the charts, or tries to figure out what it will take to qualify for the Tour Championship.
"I notice that those guys are consistent and getting in the money quite a bit, which means top 10s and things like that," Herron said. "That was my goal this year, to get a little more consistent. The more opportunities you have, you can win."
That certainly proved to be the case Sunday.
After three days of cracks about his eating habits -- "The cookies here are unreal," he said -- and describing an exercise routine that consists of five minutes of stretching, Herron showed a game that can stack up with the best of them.
In the final round of Bay Hill, it did just fine against Lehman and Davis Love III on a day packed with high winds and high drama.
Herron made five knee-knocking putts for par that kept him in the game, especially the 8-footer on the par-3 17th -- the same hole that Lehman bogeyed to drop into a tie for a lead, and that Love bogeyed to fall out of the lead.
LPGA STANDARD REGISTER PING: Karrie Webb cruised to her third title in six tournaments Sunday in Phoenix, beating Lorie Kane by four shots with a 14-under-par 274 in the Standard Register Ping.
Webb shot 3-under 69 in the final round and matched her best start to a season with six top 10 finishes in six events, something she accomplished as a rookie in 1996. Her poorest finish so far was eighth last week in Tucson, Ariz.
The quickest LPGA player to win $1 million and $2 million, Webb earned $127,500 this time and increased her tour-leading total to $419,063.
LEGENDS OF GOLF: The only twosome to threaten Hubert Green and Gil Morgan on Sunday were high winds and dry greens.
And that wasn't nearly enough to keep them from completing a wire-to-wire victory at the Legends of Golf in St. Augustine, Fla.
The duo shot a 6-under 66 to finish at 22-under 194, outdistancing Tom Wargo and John Mahaffey by three strokes and winning $158,000 each in the unofficial seniors event.
