DELTA -- A Dugway man fell more than 200 feet to his death while hiking in Millard County Saturday, police said.
Killed was:Gary A. Williams, 53, Dugway.
Williams fell from a ledge and landed 225 feet below, according to the Millard County Sheriff's Office. He was in an area known as "Sinbad" about 45 miles west of Delta near Swasey Peak in the House Range.
A friend who was hiking with Williams contacted authorities after Williams fell about 8 a.m. The hikers did not have a flashlight or lantern on the predawn hike, and on the way down Williams lost his footing in the darkness, deputies said.
He slid down a chute and fell off a cliff, apparently dying instantly when he hit the ground, Millard County Sheriff's Sgt. Jeff Whatcot said.
An emergency team reached Williams about 1 p.m. and recovered his body.
The wilderness-study area is popular for hiking, but the sheer limestone cliffs and jagged rocks merit caution. "It is neat terrain to look at, but you have to be careful out there," he said.
