LAYTON -- The mayor and City Council are sorry to lose the city's moniker in the Layton Arts Council's name change to the Davis County Arts Council, but they believe the switch was a natural progression for the organization.

"It's hard to think something has outgrown Layton as much as we've grown," Mayor Jerry Stevenson said. "But I think this is very positive."The arts council announced its name change during the City Council's Thursday work meeting.

"We're still basically who were are," Charlene Nelson, arts council executive director said.

The arts council has been attracting audiences from all over Davis County, as well as from Salt Lake and Weber counties. She said although the group is not a part of Davis County government, the county did seem excited over the arts council's name change, too.

Stevenson said the arts council needed the name change to attract a broader support base and set its sights on establishing a future indoor performing arts facility.

Councilman Stuart Adams said he hopes the arts council will continue to keep the location for such a facility focused on the future site of a Weber State University campus, located in Layton, near the Clearfield border.

Regarding the arts council moving its free Monday night concerts to Sundays, Stevenson said he had only received one complaint about the switch.
