Salt Lake firefighters were kept busy this weekend responding to four fires since Saturday -- at least two of them caused by candles.

The latest blaze happened at 12:22 a.m. Sunday at 375 N. 300 West, where firefighters responding to a house fire saw flames coming out of the second-story window. An unattended candle was determined to have caused $20,000 in damage.

Family members noticed smoke coming out of the upstairs bedroom, called for help and were able to escape without injury.

At 1:10 p.m. Saturday, a fire broke out at 968 N. Cornell St. (1550 West), and caused $100,000 damage, said Salt Lake Fire Capt. Devin Villa. The fire began when someone left a candle burning on the coffee table of one of the upstairs units, Villa said.

A city employee suffered minor burns in that fire after attempting to enter one of the units to warn residents of danger.

Firefighters also fought a fire at 7:45 p.m. Sunday at a small apartment complex at 411 N. 200 West. The cause of that blaze is still under investigation. Another fire occurred Sunday morning at 1228 W. 1100 North. Villa said it caused $7,000 in damage and was caused by a faulty extension cord.

The four fires are unrelated, Villa said.
