K.C.'S A.D. ARRESTED FOR DUI: Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Anthony Davis was arrested over the weekend for investigation of driving under the influence, police say.Davis was arrested at 3:55 a.m. Sunday as he drove in Pasco, Wash., Cpl. Jamie Raebel said Monday. He was released later in the day on his own recognizance.

Davis appeared Monday in Pasco Municipal Court. A pretrial hearing is set May 3.

Davis, 30, did not resist arrest, but "he was talkative," Raebel said, "in a negative sort of way."

The former U. of U. player refused to take a Breathalyzer test, but was arrested because of his actions and demeanor, Raebel said.

MORE PRESEASON PAINS: Add Matt Morris and Paul Wilson to the growing list of players who will miss the 1999 season because of injuries. Morris, the St. Louis Cardinals ace, and Wilson, the ex-Mets phenom pitcher, found out Monday they need reconstructive elbow surgery to repair torn ligaments.

FAME-OUS: Seve Ballesteros and Amy Alcott were inducted into The World Golf Hall of Fame, along with the late Lloyd Mangrum, a World War II veteran and U.S. Open champion.

IRON MIKE TO STAY BEHIND BARS: Mike Tyson won't be leaving a Maryland jail for at least another month. A judge might reduce his one-year sentence for assault in Maryland to time already served, but Tyson then would have to begin serving 60 days for violating terms of his Indiana probation for a 1992 rape conviction.

BETTING ON EVANDER: A late flood of money -- perhaps more than $1 million -- was bet on Evander Holyfield just before he stepped into the ring with Lennox Lewis, drawing the attention of investigators and the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

Auto racing

SURGERY FOR UNSER: Al Unser Jr. underwent two hours of surgery so surgeons could insert a metal plate into his injured right ankle. Unser broke the ankle during a crash in the Marlboro Grand Prix of Miami on Sunday.

LIPTON CHAMPIONSHIPS: Pete Sampras advanced to the quarterfinals of the Lipton Championships with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Albert Costa. Top-ranked Carlos Moya succumbed to fatigue, nerves and Sebastien Grosjean, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (11-9).

The results ensured Sampras' return to No. 1 when the rankings are released Monday. It will be his 263rd week on top, seven shy of Ivan Lendl's record.

HACKETT BREAKS RECORD: Australia's Grant Hackett broke the oldest men's world swimming record today when he bettered the 200-meter freestyle mark set by Italy's Giorgio Lamberti in 1989. Hackett clocked 1 minute, 46.67 as the first leg of a 4x200-meter relay team at Australia's national championships. Lamberti set his record at 1:46.69 in 1989.
