WEST JORDAN -- A 3-year-old boy was killed Monday after a car jumped a curb onto a sidewalk and pinned him between the vehicle and a building.

Killed was:-- Braden Kimball, 3, South Jordan.

Kimball and his father, David Kimball, had been visiting his mother, Abbi Kimball, at the West Jordan Texaco, 1300 West and 7000 South, where she is the manager, West Jordan Police Sgt. Dan Gallagher said.

After the visit, Kimball and his son came out the front door about 10 a.m. David Kimball turned left, but Braden turned right, apparently to get a better look at some tractors at a nearby construction site.

About the same time, Ralph Ensign, 72, Taylorsville, lost control of his car, which hopped the curb and went onto the sidewalk that surrounds the store, Gallagher said. The vehicle pinned the boy against the wall as he tried to run back toward his father.

Braden Kimball was transported by medical helicopter to Primary Children's Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The state medical examiner planned to conduct an autopsy on the child's body Tuesday, Gallagher said.

Ensign, who is apparently a frequent customer at the Texaco and knows the child's mother, was not cited by police. Anytime a death occurs, police do review the incident with prosecutors for possible charges, Gallagher said.

"From what the witnesses said, (Ensign) was somewhat distracted and may have hit the gas pedal instead of the break," Gallagher said. "He said he has no idea how he ended up on the sidewalk."

A check of the vehicle by a mechanic found no mechanical problems.
