Apparently, the Detroit Red Wings didn't believe they had enough to win a third straight Stanley Cup.

So on the final day for NHL trading, the Wings were the busiest barterer, adding 59 years of experience to their roster Tuesday. The Red Wings, with a mediocre 34-30-6 record, added star defenseman Chris Chelios from Chicago, veteran defenseman Ulf Samuelsson from the New York Rangers and wing Wendel Clark and backup goalie Bill Ranford from Tampa Bay.

"When you get a chance to acquire a player like Chris Chelios, you get pretty excited," Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said. "He's one of the premier defensemen in the National Hockey League. We felt it was a move we had to make."

The 37-year-old Chelios has won three Norris Trophys as the league's top defenseman in a 16-year career. He is one of the NHL's best two-way defensemen and a big hitter.

The rugged Samuelsson isn't bad, either, having won two Stanley Cups in Pittsburgh early in the decade. He's currently out 2-3 weeks with a broken foot, and was obtained for a 1999 second-round pick and a third-round selection in 2000.

Detroit already is without defensemen Todd Gill and Uwe Krupp.

Clark, 32, is one of hockey's best leaders. In his 14th season, he was the Lightning's leading scorer with 28 goals and 14 assists in 65 games.

Ranford, who was the MVP of the 1990 playoffs in helping Edmonton win the Stanley Cup, appeared in 32 games for the Lightning and compiled a 3-18-3 record in his 14th NHL season.

For Chelios, the Blackhawks received defenseman Anders Eriksson and first-round draft picks in 1999 and 2001. Chicago lost 5-2 at Pittsburgh hours after the deal.

Detroit traded backup goalie Kevin Hodson, 27, and two draft picks for Clark and Ranford.

Last year's other Stanley Cup finalist, the Washington Capitals, with little hope for a playoff berth this season, sent longtime captain Dale Hunter to the Colorado Avalanche, forward Joe Juneau to the Buffalo Sabres and wing Craig Berube to the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Avalanche gave Washington a 1999 second-round draft pick for Hunter and a third-round selection in 2000. Juneau, who has 14 goals and 27 assists this season, was dealt with a 1999 third-round pick to the Sabres for minor league defenseman Alexei Tezikov and future considerations. Berube will join the Flyers in exchange for future considerations.

San Jose obtained center Vincent Damphousse from the Montreal Canadiens for a 1999 fifth-round draft pick and a 2000 second-round selection. The Sharks also got wing Greg Pankewiecz from the Calgary Flames for future considerations.

Florida acquired defenseman Mike Wilson from the Sabres for defenseman Rhett Warrener and a 1999 fifth-round draft pick.

The Edmonton Oilers got defenseman Jason Smith from Toronto for a 1999 fourth-round and a 2000 second-round pick.

St. Louis reacquired wing Blair Atcheynum for a sixth-round draft pick in 2000.

Phoenix swapped young defensemen with the Rangers, sending 22-year-old Jason Doig to New York in exchange for 23-year-old Stanislav Neckar and a sixth-round pick in the 1999 draft. The Coyotes also sent center J.F. Jomphe to Montreal for future considerations.

The Rangers also acquired defenseman Chris O'Sullivan from Calgary for defenseman Lee Sorochan and right wing Kevin Brown from Edmonton for left wing Vladimir Vorobiev.

The Blackhawks acquired right wing Chris Murray from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Nelson Emerson.

Vancouver traded center Peter Zezel to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks for future considerations.
