NOW CONFERENCE PLANNED SATURDAY AT WESTMINSTER
The 1999 Utah National Organization for Women Conference will be Saturday, March 27, at the Gore Auditorium of Westminster College, 1650 E. 1300 South, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.Patricia Ireland, national NOW president, will be the keynote speaker. Ireland, an attorney, helped file the NOW vs. Sheidler lawsuit, which used federal racketeering law to end Operation Rescue activities at abortion clinics.
The conference also features a panel of Utah women legislators, including Patrice Arent, Jackie Biskupski, Loretta Baca, Trisha Beck and Karen Morgan, discussing the 1999 session. Abby Trujillo Maestas, executive officer of Centro de Familia, will speak on "Why Racism Hurts Us All."

POLYNESIAN HOOPS TOURNEY STARTS MARCH 29 AT WEST
Spectators are invited to Big John's annual Polynesian Basketball Tournament, March 29 through April 2 at West High School, 241 N. 300 West, Salt Lake City. Cost is $2.50 per person, or $1.50 plus a canned food item.
It is the 15th annual Big John Manumaleuna Basketball Tournament. This year, juniors, age 6 to 14, will play free of charge. Many of those who will play this year don't have enough money to enter a regular league, according to Don Tialavea, president of the Big John Manumeleuna Foundation.
John Manumoleuna was a youth corrections officer in Los Angeles, in 1977, when he started his first tournament. He brought the idea to Salt Lake City in 1984. Manumoleuna had polio as a child, was unable to walk, and died in 1981, at the age of 31.
The games begin at 6 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings; at 5 p.m. on Thursday; and at 6:30 p.m. for the championships on Friday, April 2.
AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY SEEKS S.L.-AREA VOLUNTEERS
The American Cancer Society needs volunteers in the Greater Salt Lake area.
The volunteers are needed to participate in fund-raising events like the Relay for Life and Coaches vs. Cancer. Money raised is used to fund cancer patient services, education and research programs in Utah.
They're also looking to staff the Resource, Information and Guidance cancer information hot line based in the Salt Lake American Cancer Society office, 941 E. 3300 South. The volunteers are trained to answer questions on cancer sites, treatment options, prevention, detection and smoking cessation. And they need volunteers to help with data entry, billing and other office tasks.
