NEW YORK (AP) -- Comparing the police shooting of an unarmed immigrant to a lynching, actress Ruby Dee joined husband Ossie Davis in getting arrested outside police headquarters.

"The seizing and shooting and beating reminds me of when there were lynchings all over the country," Dee said. "We've got to start saying 'No further. This must stop.' "The actors were among 71 people arrested Tuesday, the latest in a long list of high-profile activists and politicians arrested during demonstrations against the Feb. 4 killing of Amadou Diallo. Police looking for a rape suspect late at night fired 41 shots at the Guinean immigrant, hitting him 19 times.

A grand jury has almost finished hearing evidence in the case. The four officers, members of the police department's elite Street Crimes Unit, will not testify before the panel, their lawyers said.

"We'll probably have a beginning of a resolution on this thing the beginning of next week," Police Commissioner Howard Safir said.
