NEPHI -- Betty Mikkelsen was named science educator of the year for 1999 at a recent conference of science educators.
The Utah Science Teachers Association bestowed the honor on Mikkelsen for her continuing promotion of science in her school, Nephi Elementary, and in educational and community circles.She was a middle school science teacher for several years before becoming principal of the elementary school. Her students at the middle school received many honors for their abilities while she was teaching. The elementary school has been featured in articles and videos for the work the school does in promoting a study of the sciences.
Mikkelsen is a member of the Utah Science Teachers Association, serving as a member of the governing board and as president.
