Milestone victory 900 for BYU Coach Gary Pullins came in a doubleheader sweep Wednesday over Southern Colorado, 6-2 and 14-8.

The victories put BYU at the .500 mark for the first time in over a month with a 14-14 record. Cougar Ryan Pond hit his 15th homer of the season, as the teams used wooden bats for the first time at BYU since the 1970s. Pond's first homer of the year also came with a wooden bat at the University of Southern Colorado last month.Pond's solo in the fourth inning put BYU on the board for the first time as it fell behind 2-0 to the Thunderwolves. USC scored twice in the first inning when Glen Herrera hit a two-run single.

The Cougars took the lead in the fifth inning when Gary Johnson hit a two-run double.

In the nightcap, USC took a 1-0 lead when pitcher/DH Marcos Zurita singled in Jeremiah Perez in the first inning. BYU countered with three runs in the bottom of that inning, starting with a lead-off double by Shane Belliston.

BYU freshman Kevin Bills hit a two-run homer in the fourth. USC scored four runs in the fifth thanks to doubles by Roddy Friar and Gregg Hilburn.

The Cougars used five pitchers in relief, with Sky Grant, Todd Crump and Sean Noorda looking the best. Noorda struck out the final three batters of the game and Crump was credited with his first victory of the season.

Pullins, now in his 23rd year, was doused with water and presented a game ball by his team following the sweep. His record is now 900-445-6 (.668), making him the 17th active coach to reach the 900-win mark and the 27th overall in NCAA history.

"When you get to these landmarks you think about them, but I had no idea it was coming today," said Pullins. "You think about the teams that helped you get there."

The Cougars, now 14-14, next play at Southern Utah in noon doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday. USC, now 12-17 as an NCAA Division II team from Pueblo, hosts Regis College in noon doubleheaders this weekend.
