It's a good news, bad news sort of thing.
Residents in southern Davis County and northern Salt Lake County are enjoying a reprieve from the noxious odors that have plagued the area for much of the past week. That's the good news. The bad news is state and federal environmental regulators are no closer to solving the mystery of who or what is responsible for the smell.
"We've narrowed down the geographic area, but it's the same story, we haven't found anything," said Carol Sisco, spokeswoman for the Utah Department of Environmental Quality.
DEQ staffers, aided by investigators from the federal Environmental Protection Agency, spent Wednesday driving around Davis and Salt Lake counties with the most sensitive air-sniffing equipment money can buy.
They found no evidence of the smell that has bothered and sickened residents throughout the area since last Thursday. There were no new reports of odors overnight.
The EPA investigators returned to Denver Wednesday night, but they left behind their equipment, which has now been distributed to area fire stations in the event the smell comes back.
