An early morning fire Thursday ruptured a propane tank inside a food distribution center, momentarily engulfing firefighters in flames.

Despite the volatile situation, Salt Lake Fire Capt. Devin Villa said there were no injuries in the 5 a.m. blaze.Employees at Associated Foods, 1812 S. Empire Road (1825 West) reported smoke in the building and evacuated, Villa said.

Just as firefighters entered the warehouse a propane tank ruptured due to the heat, engulfing them in flames and prompting a momentary retreat.

Villa said the rupture shot a 30-foot ball of flame into the air.

The fire was declared under control about 20 minutes later and was confined to a sweeper unit with paper products in the area.

Villa said the fire was accidental, but he declined to elaborate.

Damage was estimated at $75,000.
