Dorothy Chalk James, 84, of West Jordan, UT, and former longtime resident of Farmington, New Mexico passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by friends and family, March 23, 1999.

She was born December 3, 1914 in Richfield, Utah, the daughter of James Albert Chalk and Bernetta Melinda Nielsen Chalk, the eldest of five children. Dorothy was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She provided many years of faithful service in Primary and Relief Society as well as playing the piano and organ for services. She was also faithful in doing temple work. Dorothy loved working with young children. She spent many happy years teaching preschoolers with special needs. Many of her fondest memories were of these children. She touched many lives with her loving and gentle way. Dorothy loved learning, constantly reading and discovering new facts about the world she lived in. She enjoyed poetry, art, and music. She loved life and shared her enthusiasm with all around her.She raised six children: Janet Smith, Joseph David James, and Karen Melinda Kendrick of Farmington, NM; Dorothy Ellen Walker, Logan, UT, Susan Naomi Nelson, West Jordan, UT; and Scott Alton James, The Woodlands, TX. She also is survived by her brothers and sisters, Bernice Moser, Auburn, CA, Bernetta Naomi Thayne and David Nielson Chalk, Roseville, CA, and James Nielson Chalk, Cypress, CA, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. She especially enjoyed her 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. All who knew her loved her and her family was the center of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter Carol James.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 26, 1999, at 11 a.m. at Heritage Stake Center, 7350 So. 3200 W., West Jordan, UT. Friends may call Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 So. State St., Murray, UT and on Friday from 10:00-10:45 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Burial will be in Richfield, UT.
