Together Again
Chauncey Oswald Rowe passed away peacefully on March 23, 1999, rejoining his beloved wife, Ann.Chauncey was born on March 31, 1910, in Salt Lake City to Vera Hannah Oswald and William Chauncey Rowe. He was supported and loved by his stepfather, Levi Muir.
Chauncey attended East High and served an LDS Mission in Germany (1931-1934). He received a Bachelors Degree in Political Science from the University of Utah, a Masters Degree in Public Affairs from George Washington University, and completed doctoral work in Public Administration at American University.
Chauncey married Anna Blanche Hughes of Spanish Fork, Utah, in 1935 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They moved to Virginia until his retirement in 1970, returning to Salt Lake City to be near their families.
Chauncey had a distinguished career with the U.S. Government, including Deputy Director of the Office of Foreign Service of the State Department (1947-1951); President of the Institute of Inter-American Affairs (1952-1953); Deputy Assistant, Postmaster General (1953-1958); and Deputy Secretary of Defense (1961-1970). The family lived in Spain while he served as European Representative for RKO Radio and Films (1945-1947).
Chauncey will be remembered for his great love and devotion for his sweet wife, Ann. They traveled extensively around the world and loved the outdoors. He enjoyed the many fishing and hunting trips with family and friends. He served as the President of the Utah Chapter of NARFE, where he worked toward obtaining fair taxation practices for Federal retirees residing in Utah. Chauncey's greatest joy in his later life was his 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his children, Gary (Michael) Rowe of Portland, Oregon; Karen (Jim) McBride of Ojai, California; Norman Rowe of Salt Lake City, and Kathy (Richard) Schow of West Jordan, Utah.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, March 27, 1999 at the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary Chapel, 3401 South Highland Drive. Family and friends may call prior to the service from 10:45-11:45 a.m. Interment Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
