The "Roaring 20s" heralded the day of the flapper, and even the conservative Deseret News featured fashions that showed off shapely legs. For a fee, you could see Miss Utah in a "setting rich and daring down by the Old Mill Stream" -- at the Old Mill Club. The ruins of the old mill still stood "amid groves of cottonwoods, looking out upon beautiful surroundings." Beauty pageants had become a feature of American life and the traditional pose -- right hand on the head, left on the hip, was a standard for young women.
