LUCAS GIVES $1.5 MILLION TO CREATE DIGITAL STUDIO
"Star Wars" director George Lucas donated $1.5 million to create a new digital studio at his alma mater, the University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television.
The facility, located in USC's new Robert Zemeckis Center for Digital Arts, will be named after late director Akira Kurosawa, known for such films as "Ran," "Rashomon" and "The Seven Samurai."
"Kurosawa was one of film's true greats," Lucas said this week. "His ability to transform a vision into a powerful work of art is unparalleled. So it seemed appropriate to name the new digital stage after him.
"This way, we pay tribute to Kurosawa while at the same time inspiring students to break new ground the way he did."
