NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Although Michael W. Smith got the lion's share of the trophies at the 30th Annual Dove Awards, he steered all the glory and praise to his true inspiration.
The Christian singer, whose six awards Wednesday included best artist, said the main focus should "be all about glorifying God, and that's still my prayer at the end of this show."Similar sentiments were voiced by Kirk Franklin, whose four awards included best contemporary gospel album ("Nu Nation Project") and best urban song ("Revolution.")
"I want to reach the people and I want to be pleasing to him," Franklin said. "That's all I want to do."
The Dove Awards, handed out by the Gospel Music Association, honor Christian music in 43 categories spanning several music genres.
In the major awards, 19-year-old Jaci Valesquez won best female vocalist; Jennifer Knapp was named best new artist; and Chris Rice was named best male vocalist. Point of Grace won the best group Dove Award.
