The man shot by Salt Lake police officers while trying to escape last week is facing felony charges in connection with the incident.

Christopher J. Winderlin was carrying a loaded gun and some methamphetamine before he tried to run from officers Thursday, March 18. Winderlin is on probation and cannot legally carry a firearm, according to 3rd District Court charges filed Friday.Police officers tried to stop Winderlin as he rode a mountain bike near 400 East and 900 South. He jumped from the bike and ran, police said. He dropped the gun while trying to get away and then tried to hide under a porch.

Police ordered him out, but he refused. Salt Lake Police Sgt. Chris Larsen and officer Mark Nelson opened fire when he made a quick hand motion toward a holster on his side, police said.

Winderlin was in satisfactory condition Fridy night, LDS Hospital spokesman Jess Gomez said.
