Charity is one of the many principles of the gospel that was taught to me as a child by my parents. They taught this by the following:Teaching the principle. From the time I was a very small child I was admonished to treat every individual I met with courtesy, compassion and respect. I was encouraged to consider the feelings of others at all times and to always remember that we are all children of our Heavenly Father.
Speaking positively of others. My mother often spoke of the good she noticed in people and expressed appreciation for the unique talents they had to offer. She always looked beyond the obvious to the child of God within.
Being an example. My mother has always been one to greet each person she meets with a warm smile and a friendly hello. Many were the times I watched while she stopped to lend aid and comfort to those in need. Her care and concern were graciously extended to all.
Providing opportunities for service. Being with and helping my parents as they fulfilled their priesthood and Relief Society responsibilities were opportunities I had as a child. I was often able to accompany them on visits to ward members, help prepare meals for the sick, tend children and give of my time and means in the service of others. I was encouraged to consider what I could do to ease the burdens of others.
The principle of charity has richly blessed my life and provided me the opportunity to grow and learn from the many people whose paths have crossed mine. -- Robbie Stockton, Hollister, Calif.
