OGDEN (AP) -- Scott Shields, a football star at Weber State for four years, has been charged with assault and disorderly conduct after a fellow student was beaten.
Shields, selected three times to I-AA All-America team, is expected to be picked in next month's NFL draft.He was charged Friday for the altercation that occurred after a Weber State basketball game two weeks ago.
Weber County prosecutors also charged another football player, Phil Hazel, with assault and disorderly conduct. Weber State student Jason West was charged with criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.
Shields' arraignment hearing is scheduled for April 8.
He was a safety, punter and placekicker during his four years at Weber State and played in the Senior Bowl after last season.
According to the participants, the fights broke out after the Wildcats won the Big Sky Tournament March 6, three days before NFL scouts were in town to see Shields work out.
West said Shields and Hazel approached him after he set off a car alarm in the parking lot.
According to campus police, West and Hazel began to argue. West backed up against another car and it was then that Shields was said to have hit him.
"Shields came out of nowhere and either shoved or hit West. That's clear assault," said Sgt. Dane LeBlanc.
He said Shields also caused $1,500 worth of damage. "He knocked him in the back of a Chevy Blazer and broke the back window."
Shields has previously denied the charges.
