Authorities are investigating a fire that caused about $25,000 in damage to a West Central City home Saturday.

Fire crews responded to 129 W. Mead Ave. (980 South) about noon and found heavy smoke and fire emerging from the rear of the single-family house, said Salt Lake Fire Capt. Devin Villa.Firefighters performed a fast attack, entering the house to extinguish the fire and search for residents, Villa said. About eight people living at the house evacuated the residence safely shortly after noticing smoke extending from the rear of the house and called 911.

The fire, which extended into the attic, was under control within an hour, Villa said. The cause of the fire is unknown.
