HockeyGILMOUR OUT FOR SEASON: Doug Gilmour, whose signing as a free agent failed to turn the Chicago Blackhawks into a playoff contender, will be sidelined the rest of the season with a bulging disk in his back.
The 35-year-old center is considering microsurgery to shave the disk that is pressing on his sciatic nerve.
SURGERY FOR KASPARAITIS: Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Darius Kasparaitis underwent knee surgery on Wednesday and is expected to return to the team sometime early next season.
The defenseman injured his knee in the preseason but managed to play 48 games until his skate caught in a rut March 5 during a game against Edmonton and did more damage to the knee ligaments. He hasn't played since.

LIPTON CHAMPIONSHIPS: Richard Krajicek won his first U.S. tournament title since 1993 Saturday, dealing 24 aces to beat unseeded Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 7-5 in the final of the Lipton Championships at Key Biscayne, Fla.
Krajicek struggled in the opening set, losing his serve for only the third and fourth times in the tournament, then found the groove. Reaching a top speed of 130 mph, he lost only nine of 61 points on his first serve.
FAMILY CIRCLE CUP: U.S. Open champion Lindsay Davenport and Mary Joe Fernandez have withdrawn from the Family Circle Cup in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Davenport said she strained her left wrist at the Lipton.
Mary Joe Fernandez also pulled out of the season's first clay court tournament, which begins Monday, with a similar injury.
Fernandez said she periodically feels effects from right wrist surgery in late 1997.

WORLD CROSS COUNTRY: Africans dominated the World Cross Country Championships Saturday in Belfast, Northern Ireland, winning seven of the nine individual medals.
Ethiopia's Gete Wami won the senior women's 5-mile race in 28 minutes. She was followed by teammate Merima Denboba and Britain's Paula Radcliffe.
