This letter is in response to the commentary on the "worthless" penny the other day.

Maybe I live in a different world than people who would like to do away with the penny, but pennies have financed trips to the grocery store for a gallon of milk, loads of laundry, loaves of bread, and so on. The lowly penny when gathered up has saved us from going hungry and doing without.I have taught my son to pick up any penny he finds discarded in the streets. After attending school and being taught how "worthless" the penny was, he was starting to toss them out like so many others have. When we sat down together and rolled up the pennies we had carefully stowed in a jar, he was delighted to discover that he had over $4 saved up that he could spend any way he wanted.

He, of course, chose to spend the rolled up pennies on a toy that didn't last long, but I hoped the impression of counting up those "worthless" pennies made a lasting impact.

When money is tight, a penny can mean a lot. We always save our pennies. And it has never been a "worthless" endeavor.
