PROVO -- A man accused of killing an alleged gang rival at a Provo dance club pleaded not guilty in 4th District Court.
Edgardo Mata, 18, Salem, was arraigned before Judge Anthony Schofield last week following a preliminary hearing earlier in the month. Mata is charged with one count of murder, a first-degree felony. The trial is scheduled for June 7-11.Police officers testified at the preliminary hearing that Mata admitted to smuggling a .25-caliber hand gun into Club Omni Dec. 19, the night 17-year-old Ramon Pena was shot twice in the back of the head. Mata also admitted hiding the gun in a haystack in Salem near his home, police said.
Mata is held in the Utah County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.
