MAPLETON -- The city's master street plan including a controversial double frontage issue was approved this week by the City Council.

The council left intact a planned extension of 800 South from Main Street to a planned extension of 1000 East that fronts the back of several property owners' yards, allowing for a street in front and in back of their property, a city official said. The council may use the right-of-way it owns for the extension as leverage to widen 900 South, rather than putting in the 800 South extension. The master street plan is an element of the city's general plan.

"If we can negotiate with the owners then we could give back 40 feet on the back and take 10 feet in front to widen the road," Mayor Richard Young said.

In another matter the council may charge property owners an approximate $300 hook up fee to connect to the new secondary water system now under construction. Also under consideration is a minimum $10 a month fee for water use, depending on the size of the acreage and the water pipe serving it, Young said. Water conservation rules would also be put in place. Secondary water is untreated and for outdoor use only.
