Voters in Beverly Hills will consider an initiative to put a warning label on fur coats describing how the animal died. Anti-fur activists suggest "slaughtered." The fur industry suggests "flu.'Objecting to the label, the mayor of Beverly Hills said: "We don't need a pelt posse here." More serious crimes in Beverly Hills include being overweight, owning an unwaxed Mercedes, and showing no interest in the Oscars.

This is the proposed label: "This product is made with fur from animals that may have been killed by electrocution, gassing, neck-breaking, or poisoning and may have been trapped in steel-jaw, leg-hold traps." An industry spokesman said, "We don't poison."

So-called truth-in-slaughtering labels could spread to your local fast-food place: "This chicken was given a lethal injection by the colonel."
