Weber State
TRACK & FIELD: Six Weber State outdoor track and field athletes produced NCAA Provisional Qualifying times and marks at this weekend's Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.
In the men's 10,000-meter run, Jason Schoenfeld broke the Weber State school record in 29:18.90. The old mark was 29:22.11, set in 1996 by Bob Evans. It was just 8.9 seconds off NCAA automatic qualifying time.
Teammate Jed Johansen was just behind Schoenfeld at 29:23.11, the third fastest time in Weber State school history, also an NCAA Provisional qualifying time.
"Those were two tremendous performances for this early in the season," said WSU men's coach, Chick Hislop.
In the men's high jump, T.L. Bartlett and Charles Clinger started out the outdoor season with a bang. Both jumpers cleared 7-foot-1 3/4, taking second and third at the Invitational. That is the minimal height needed for an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark. The automatic height is 7-4 1/2. Both jumps were Weber State outdoor records in the event. Clinger also won the men's long jump with a personal best of 24-1 1/2.
On the women's side, Heidi Hess, running in her first-ever collegiate 5,000 meters, ran an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time of 16:42.81. It is the second-fastest time in WSU women's outdoor track history. The fastest was run last year by Sharlyn Maughan (16:21.43).
In the women's 10,000 meters, Summer Schenck posted an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time of 35:37.32, in her first 10,000 meter race in more than two years. Schenck sat out the 1998-99 season as a red-shirt due to a foot injury.
