Home education convention Friday and Saturday at BYU

PROVO -- Parents who educate their children at home -- or are interested in alternatives to public education -- are invited to the Utah Home Education Association's convention Friday and Saturday at Brigham Young University.

Keynote speakers at the 19th annual event are LaDawn and Jim Jacob, who started home-schooling their children 17 years ago. LaDawn Jacob, a National Young Mother award-winner, earned degrees in elementary education and music from BYU. Jim Jacob is an accountant at BYU.The Jacobs also will present "Teaching Teens Can Be Terrific" at 8:30 a.m. Other workshops will address such topics as "How to Home-school" and "All About College Admissions."

According to the association, more than a million children across the country are home- schooled. In Utah, some 25,000 children have been taken out of the public school system for parent-led classes.

Cost is $30 per adult and $8 per teenager. Family discounts are available.
