Woman charged in theft of payments to dead dad

A Murray woman was charged Wednesday with illegally collecting her father's Social Security payments after his death.

The woman, 26, was charged with theft by deception, a second-degree felony. Prosecutors say the woman withdrew more than $5,000 deposited directly by the Social Security Administration over a six-month period following the death of her father in August of 1997.The woman admitted she failed to notify the Social Security Administration of his death and she withdrew the funds for her living expenses, according to the charges filed in the 3rd District Court.

The woman said she was notified by First Security Bank that she had used Social Security funds from her father's account and that she needed to repay the bank $900, which she did, the documents state.
