Virginia Pickett Backman, 75, wife of Elder Robert L. Backman, Emeritus General Authority, died June 4 in Salt Lake City. She traveled throughout the world as companion to her husband, who was sustained to the First Quorum of the Seventy in 1978 and given emeritus status in 1992. Among her many callings, she served with Elder Backman when he was president of the Northwestern States Mission from 1966-1969.
Kenneth Young Knight, 72, former president of the Canada Vancouver Mission, died June 5 in Salt Lake City. He was serving as mission president when he was diagnosed with cancer last January. He was retired as vice chairman of Sinclair Oil Corp., and as president of Little America Hotel Co. Among many community positions, he served as chairman of the Utah Symphony Board, the Salt Lake Valley Hospitals Governing Board of Intermountain Health Care and the Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. Included in his many recognitions were the Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commerce "A Giant in our City" Award a year ago, and the Executive Women "International Executive of the Year" Award.Inez Tolman Waldron, 86, a member of the Relief Society General Board from 1969 to 1976, died June 2 in Bountiful, Utah. She also served with her husband, Eldred Waldron, when he was president of the Hawaiian Mission during World II. During that time, she supervised 45 branch Relief Societies on five islands, including the branch at the Kalaupapa Leper Settlement on Molokai. She and her husband later served a mission at the Los Angeles Temple Visitors Center and worked for many years in the Logan and Salt Lake temples before his death in 1992.
