Middle-of-night fire damages machine shop

A Salt Lake machine shop sustained an estimated $30,000 in damage from a three-alarm fire early Saturday morning.

Prime Machinery, 575 W. 800 South, was empty and no one was injured. The Salt Lake City Fire Department is investigating the fire, but arson is not suspected.Firefighters arrived around 1 a.m. to find fire both inside and outside the large metal warehouse.

Salt Lake Fire Capt. Devin Villa said firefighters immediately became concerned about a 500-gallon propane tank just outside the structure. The tank vented, shooting flames 30 feet into the air. It took firefighters seven minutes to cool the tank and bring it under control, and another 20 minutes to extinguish the fire, Villa said.

Eleven fire trucks and about 50 firefighters were involved in battling the blaze.
