Obituary: Ray Christian Nielson

Ray Christian Nielson, 86, passed away June 12, 1999, at the Highland Care Center, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Ray was born April 9, 1913, in Manti, Sanpete County, Utah, to Niels C. Nielson and Mary Abigail Marker Nielson, joining sister Ruby who was nine years older. His early education was in Manti, and he went on to graduate from Stevens Henager College, a junior college of business, in Salt Lake City, Utah.November 11, 1931, he married his high school sweetheart Effie Rosella Olson and began work on a dairy farm for his uncle Wendall Bosen. From that beginning he was employed as a tile setter, setting most of the tile in the Manti LDS Temple, the U.S. Forest Service as a time keeper on WPA projects, raised turkeys in Delta, Utah, and retired as Assistant Director of the Utah State Tax Commission. Ray enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid rock collector. In his high school days he played the saxophone in the band and even strummed a little on the Hawaiian guitar.

Survivors include his wife, Effie; son and daughter-in-law, Dell Ray and Penny Nielson; four grandchildren, Thomas Wayne Nielson, Scotty Lee Nielson, Daniel Ray Nielson, Darcy Renae Nielson-Smith; and 10 great-grand children.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 16, 1999, 10:30 a.m. at the Wilford 2nd Ward Chapel, 3179 Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah. Friends may call Tuesday, June 15 at the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 Highland Drive, from 6-8 p.m., and at the ward Wednesday prior to the service from 9:15-10:15 A.M. Interment will follow at the Moroni City Cemetery, Moroni, Utah, at 3:30 P.M.
