MANTI: Vonda Geneta Peterson Merriam, loving wife, mother and grandmother, returned to her heavenly father, and her eternal companion, on June 15, 1999 at the age of 88, following complications of a stroke.
She was born January 10, 1911, to John J and Nelzina Marie Peterson, in Manti, UT. Married Edgar Merriam June 10, 1930. Sealed April 15, 1950, Manti Temple.Survived by nine living children, Mary Ursenbach, Mt. Pleasant, Drew (Joy) Merriam, Manti, Connie (Toy) Hansen, Taylorsville, Anna May Thomas, Manti, Wayne (Debra) Merriam, Sante, CA., Vonda Rae Poulsen, West Valley City, Diana (Dennis) Clark, Riverton, Burdell (Marsha) Merriam, Cedar City and Jo Lynn (Richard) Lund, Tucson, AZ.; 23 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren and two great great grandsons. Vonda also had three very special adopted daughters, Jean, Sandy and Suzann, She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter Louise Kump, two grandchildren, three sons-in-law, sister and brothers.
Vonda lived and raised her 10 children in Manti, Utah. She was a loving mother and grandmother. Teaching her children love, responsibility and the joy of hard work. Vonda was extremely talented with her hands. She taught not only her children these talents, but her grandchildren as well. She created and made hand made gifts for her whole family for Christmas, sometimes giving up to 10 quilts per Christmas. She was known as Grandma Merriam throughout the neighborhood always having homemade cookies for the neighbor children. Vonda and her husband always cured their own meat, teaching her son and grandson the family recipe. No one ever left Vondas house hungry. Vonda was a talented writer and author of many stories published in the Saga of the Sanpitch. Vonda had a great capacity for love. Her greatest love was her family who deeply loved her in return. She never had a lot of material things, but was completely content and happy with her life. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 18, 1999 at 12 noon at the Manti Tabernacle, 100 South Main. Friends and family may call from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. prior to services. Burial will be in the Manti City Cemetery under the direction of Ursenbach Funeral Home.
