Eva Pauline Maxwell Battey "Paula", age 70, of Bloomfield Hills, MI, and Panama City Beach, FL, died June 14, 1999, after a long illness.
Born in 1929 in Salt Lake City. She received a B.A. in Education and a M.A. in Linguistics from Oakland University, Rochester, Michigan. Daughter, Barbara said "Mom was the natural born teacher and mother. Her greatest gift to the world was her ability to help children believe in themselves." Her husband recalls their nightly games of gin rummy, saying, "On the day she died she beat me at gin again, as usual."She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Leslie James Battey, Jr., "Jim", six children, Barbara Curtis, Jim (Judy Muse) Battey, Karen (Alan Machcinski) MacKay, Alice (Kevin) Yash, Paul Battey, and David (Patricia) Battey, as well as 13 grandchildren; and brothers, Frank L. Maxwell, Jr. and Paul J. Maxwell of Salt Lake City.
She gave 22 years of dedicated service as an English teacher at Lincoln Jr. High and Best Jr. High Schools of Ferndale, MT. She enjoyed traveling around the world with her husband. One exciting adventure was walking the Great Wall of China. She imparted her love and awe of nature to all her family, as well as her lively curiosity in all things. She loved the natural world, and delighted in the wildlife at their homes on a wooded lot in Bloomfield Hills and on a lagoon in Panama City Beach. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren. Her many gifts to her family are priceless and eternal.
Services will be held Saturday, June 19, 10:30 a.m. at Christ Church Cranbrook, Bloomfield Hills, MI.
