Tad Baltzer, a sophomore at Ricks College from Orangeville, Utah, won the National Junior College Athletic Association's men's discus competition with a toss of 163-ft 8-inches during the national finals in May in Edwardsville, Ill. He served in the Samoa Apia Mission and is currently a counselor in the elders quorum presidency in the Ricks College 28th Ward, Ricks College Sixth Stake.Youth
Jonathan Hopkins, a priest in the Eighteenth North Ward, Salt Lake Eagle Gate Stake, received the 1999 Mabel and Lawrence S. Cooke Scholarship from the National Eagle Scout Association. He was the 10th recipient of the award and was chosen on the basis of need and merit from among hundreds of Eagle Scout applicants across the nation. He will attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology this fall as a freshman where he plans to major in architecture and computer science.
Hayley Skousen, of the Winter Park Ward, Orlando Florida Stake, became the Florida State Juvenile Figure Skating Champion at the Sunshine State Games May 14. She has skated for six years and is currently learning to perform triple jumps. Her routine requires practice six days a week. She is also an honor student and enjoys activities in her Beehive class.
Kelly Cramer, an Eagle Scout in the Clarkston 2nd Ward, Lewiston Idaho Stake, won first place in the national DECA competition recently in Orlando, Fla. He participated in the "entrepreneurship participating franchise."
Lindsey, 8, and Stephanie Brinton, 10, two sisters, were first-place winners in their respective categories at the 19th Annual Bartok-Kabalevsky-Prokofieff International Piano Competition and Festival held in Radford, Va., recently. The competition was sponsored by Radford University and attracted pianists from around the world. Lindsey competed in the first through third grade category, while Stephanie competed in the fourth through sixth grade category. They are the daughters of Gregory and Sally Brinton in the Federal Heights Ward, Salt Lake Emigration Stake.
Rory Reid of the Legacy Ward, Las Vegas Nevada Green Valley Stake, was recently named Nevada State Democratic Party chairman, believed the first Church member named to the position. He has been active in state politics for 30 years.
Tom Stollings was recently selected from 4,300 applicants as Florida's top health educator of the year. His classes are popular among students because of the student involvement he inspires. He is currently one of 10 teachers in Florida re-writing the curriculum for anti-tobacco instruction. He resides in the Macclenny Ward, Lake City Florida Stake.
